Transition from KS2 to KS3

At Friesland we pride ourselves on our extensive transition work. We currently take students into Year 7 from 21 different feeder schools spread across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

Performing Arts

Through our Performing Arts status we work with several of our cluster schools from infants. This work continues through until the end of Year 6 when students get the chance to appear in our annual Dance Show. The Performing Arts team also host many of our cluster schools for Year 5 Performing Arts days. Students spend a morning in school experiencing lessons in drama, dance and music.

Summer Taster Day

Year 5 students also have a further opportunity to visit Friesland as part of a Taster Day which takes place in the summer term. Students spend a whole day at Friesland, meeting staff, experiencing lessons, break and lunch. They are escorted by some of our Year 7 students and the feedback from these days is always positive.

Year 5 University

We also run a Children’s University for Year 5 students from our cluster schools. This runs in 5 week blocks and students experience lessons in English, ICT and Science, culminating in a ‘graduation ceremony’ at the end of the 5 week block with parents invited to attend.

Subject Visits

Throughout Year 5 and Year 6 members of staff from a wide range of subject areas visit junior schools to deliver lessons and activities. During 2011-12 staff from Friesland spent time in junior schools delivering lessons in Maths, English, Science and Performing Arts. In 2013 further activities will include Art and Technology.

Open Evening

In September of Year 6 students and their parents are invited to attend our Open Evening. This provides another opportunity to visit the school, to meet staff, Governors and existing students and to discover more about the school before parents have to make their choice of Secondary School.

What happens when I decide that Friesland is our choice?

Once the choice has been made and confirmed our Head of Year 7 and SENCo will then visit each of the students and talk to their Year 6 teacher to gather relevant information which helps inform the process of selecting new tutor groups. The majority of students will then spend two induction days at Friesland, meeting their new Form Tutor, being with their new Form Group and experiencing two days of life at Friesland. For some selected students, a third induction day is offered. These days culminate in an evening event where parents get the opportunity to meet their child’s Form Tutor and Head of Year together with other key Friesland staff. There is also the chance to purchase equipment and uniform at this time.

If you have any questions about our transition work please do not hesitate to contact school and we will pass your enquiry onto the relevant person.
