We believe learning should be a journey that includes inspiration and challenge. Our students will be encouraged to achieve greatness and lead other to do the same. We believe in respect, courtesy and dignity for all. We also believe that making sure everyone in school is safe is an underpinning principle in ensuring our community can achieve these aims.
At Friesland school we have a highly experienced and committed safeguarding team (see below) and we strive to identify and remove all barriers to learning as an important part of the partnership between school and home.

Staff in school, by law, have a duty to report any concerns that they may have that any child may be suffering significant harm, particularly as a consequence of possible abuse. It is a Department for Education requirement that each school in the country nominates a senior member of staff who will have special responsibility for Child Protection. Here at Friesland School, we have five members of staff who have received advanced safeguarding training.
The school has a policy on Safeguarding, which has been agreed by the Governing Body. As a school, we have close contacts with the School Health Service, Children’s Services and the Police, any or all of who may become involved if abuse is suspected or alleged. The school has a responsibility to collate basic information such as who has parental responsibility for a child, and to pass this information to the relevant agencies if so requested. In the event of an investigation into possible child abuse, the school has a duty to cooperate with the investigating agencies to the best of their ability to promote the welfare of the child. Whilst the school will always attempt to work in partnership with parents and carers, and try to ensure that they are fully informed of, and participate in, any action concerning their child, if there is a conflict of interest; the welfare of the child must be the paramount consideration.
The process of recruiting new staff is rigorous follows the ‘Safer Recruitment’ advice from the Local Authority. Our staff and volunteers are DBS checked to ensure all our pupils stay safe. There are many ways by which we teach children to stay safe. These include:
PSHE & Well Being
We believe that we will prepare children for the future and raise standards across the curriculum by stimulating student’s imaginations, developing empathy and providing opportunities for critical thinking and problem solving. This includes promoting British Values. The values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs are promoted through the delivery of our curriculum, specific sessions and assemblies to develop children’s social and emotional understanding. We also have an established School Council, giving all children opportunities to have a voice.
Mrs A Howes, Mrs J Lacey and Mr B Middleton lead on our PSHE curriculum in Key Stage 3 & 4 with support from all 5 Heads of Year. Mr M Puddy leads on Key Stage 5 PSHE with the 2 sixth form Heads of Year.
At Friesland School we are committed to ensuring all members of our school are as safe as possible online. We regularly monitor our ‘Twitter’ and ‘You Tube’ sites for content. We will take immediate action and measures against any individual who presents defamatory, abusive or offensive material online. We are fully aware that the future of our students will be reliant on IT and computing. We, therefore, endeavour to provide our students with the skills and the understanding that are necessary to this aim.
At the same time, the school recognises that it has NO CONTROL over usage of the Internet at home and that we must, therefore, rely on each family unit to contribute towards a truly safe school that is respectful towards ALL members of the school community.
All students are taught programs of study with a focus on online-safety through their Computing lessons, and the school is an active participant of Safer Internet Themed weeks each year. Regular assemblies on the theme of online safety to all year groups are also undertaken to raise awareness of this ever increasing issue. Thinkuknow – More information for parents about all things online can be found here. Most websites have a way for you to ask them to remove ‘content’ – like videos, pictures, comments or profiles – that upsets you. This is called making a ‘report’. CEOP – The Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre is dedicated to eradicating the sexual abuse of children. That means they are part of UK policing and very much about tracking and bringing offenders to account either directly or in partnership with local and international forces. ceop.police.uk/
Digital Parenting is a publication by The Vodafone Foundation. It aims to provide parents with useful information to help them understand the latest technology, parental controls and features available to help keep youngsters safe online. There is a wealth of information ranging including setting parental controls, recommended apps, cyber bullying and guidance in relation to online activities and their impact. Online Radicalisation – There are more and more reports of young British people travelling to join extremist organisations in Syria and Iraq. We are in the middle of a national debate about how to identify young people who have been radicalised and stop them leaving home.
