Mastering understanding in Maths
Our content rich curriculum provides students with the powerful understanding required for them to thrive in their maths GCSE and A levels, as well as other subjects and also in their life beyond school. We follow the content of the national curriculum which we carefully sequence to enhance current foundations and developing mathematical reasoning whilst promoting logical thinking. Through discussion and practice different approaches are explored and examined. Our curriculum gives our students the opportunity to gain a deep understanding of maths and elegant mathematical communication skills. In all we do we promote independence, resilience and fluency of the subject and its skills.
Schemes of work are structured to build a logical picture of maths which complements current skills and advances them to deepen their understanding.
KS3: Our mathematics curriculum is designed to progressively help students master a number of key skills throughout Key Stage 3. Lessons are planned and delivered to engage pupils in the curriculum and promote an enjoyment of the subject. We deliver our Key Stage 3 curriculum through a mastery teaching approach. One of our team is a trained Mastery Specialist and has delivered a number of training sessions to our team to ensure our curriculum delivery is consistent. The curriculum is structured to give students an in-depth understanding of their mathematical skills. It provides challenge throughout and promotes real life applications. The mastery approach requires students to really think and understand what they are doing. Student voice confirms that this is how they feel in Year 7 and 8.
KS4 (Year 9 & 10): In Year 9 and 10 students study the GCSE curriculum, with traditionally sets 1 & 2 following the higher specification and the rest the foundation specification. This accelerates the learning of our students at an earlier age whilst leaving a full year to revisit all areas of mathematics that are needed. The KS4 course requires the coverage of broader and deeper mathematical content, delivered through a single GCSE. There is now a greater emphasis on problem-solving and mathematical reasoning, with more marks in the GCSE exams being allocated to these higher-order skills. There is also more content to teach with harder topics being introduced across both tiers, like trigonometry, standard form, functions and histograms. The course has been designed to equip students for the mathematical demands that they will face in further study of the subject or in employment. Students will continue to work on the mastery of mathematics in KS4 with topics and skills being revisited including the main topic areas of number, ratio, algebra, shape and data, the focus now being on how it is presented in GCSE examination papers and students now being able to apply the knowledge they gained in KS3 into different contexts in the GCSE curriculum.
KS4 (Year 11): In Year 11, there is more focus on exam practice and technique. A 3-weekly cycle of GCSE test papers are completed under test conditions and marked using exam board mark schemes. Students are then taught targeted topics which are based on these regular assessments allowing students to revisit topics where they have struggled to understand or retain the required knowledge/techniques to answer the exam question. Formalised mock examinations take place twice throughout the year. This allows teachers and students to know their progress, under examination pressure. Throughout the GCSE course we aim to improve student retention of knowledge and skills; build student confidence ahead of assessments and ensure students are equipped with the resilience to achieve in their GCSE exams and the wider world.
KS5 (Maths): A level maths builds on from GCSE level maths and furthers skills explored during year 10 and 11. It is delivered through the modules of pure, statistics and mechanics. The Pure part of the content introduces calculus and its applications and it emphasises how mathematical ideas are interconnected and how mathematics can be applied to model situations mathematically using algebra and other representations, to help make sense of data, to understand the physical world and to solve problems in a variety of contexts, including social sciences and business. The Applied content covers both statistics and mechanics and thinking about higher level maths in a real-life situation. We use assessment throughout the A Level course to both track students abilities and provide feedback on what they need to be improving. An initial baseline assessment is used early on in the course to help students focus their basic skills of algebra and how to improve their foundation skills. Other assessments are used to help students highlight any areas of revision throughout their two years. We use three mock exams during year 12 and 13, with two being held in year 13, for students to focus on exam techniques and putting their skills into practise. Our A Level course is designed so that students learn a variety of topics throughout the two years, which are built upon in year 13. It prepares students for further study and employment in a wide range of disciplines involving the use of mathematics. Through our delivery of the A level maths curriculum we promote resilience and independent learning.
KS5 (Further maths) – The further maths A level qualification aims to both deepen and broaden students understanding more than A level maths. It both builds on from GCSE maths and A level maths and is aimed at that students with a real interest and enjoyment in the subject of maths. As well as building on algebra and calculus introduced in A level maths, the A level further mathematics core content introduces complex numbers and matrices, fundamental mathematical ideas with wide applications in maths, engineering, physical sciences and computing. We tailor the rest of the course for Further Maths based upon the abilities of our students and how we know it will further their understanding. The course is designed so that students study both further maths and maths alongside one another, and so topics are chosen carefully to allow this most successfully to happen. Assessment and mock exams are used throughout the two years to enable students to be able to focus on where they need to continue to improve. Our curriculum is delivered effectively as we have a highly mathematically skilled department.
Diversity, good citizenship and respect
Students are offered a wide variety of opportunities and experiences that enrich their understanding of the world around them and how they are connected to it.
– FSMQ currently being offered with Year 10 to run after school as a way of challenging the most able and improving the uptake of A level Maths and Further Maths
– STEM club and activities
– UK Maths challenge done in Years 7-10 and sixth form with most able, providing them with challenge and competition
– Boosters/intervention provided in small groups for Year 7, 8 and 11 to help them build confidence in maths and provide
– A weekly mathematics slot in registration allows students to explore a different side of mathematics. Without focussing on calculations, it delves into the language surrounding the maths and offers various real-life statistics to engage students with the world around them
– Tasters day are run for Y11 before picking their A level options. Current Y12 maths students also speak to the Y11 to give them an insight to the demand of the course
-Period 6 for Sixth form every week. This provides every year 12 and year 13 student with the opportunity to get help outside of lessons and in particular support for those students finding the gap between GCSE and A Level a difficult one to bridge.
– A school trip is offered to Maths Inspiration show aimed at most able in Years 9 & 10
– During the last week of the school year Maths Day is run with Y8. A hands on day of real life maths applications and
– Revision session are offered to pupils after school and during school holidays.
