As always it has been a busy time in the Sixth Form and post mock exams there has been an increased focus upon preparing our students for life beyond Friesland! We have visited the University of Nottingham and the University of Derby for tailor made days, focusing upon university life, selecting courses and writing personal statements. As we viewed halls of residence the excitement was tangible amongst many of our students, whilst the middle aged Director of Sixth Form observed that they ‘certainly weren’t like this in his day’!
Part of the purpose of the visits was to show students’ contrasting types of universities to help inform their decision making and it has also been good to hear our students’ comments from their independent Open Day visits.
Parents were invited to an information evening recently regarding higher education finance and alternative opportunities to university, including apprenticeships and other work based training pathways.
A group of our students visited Derby Roundhouse for a careers morning, where they encountered a strong presence from Rolls Royce and a motivational speech from Dan Miller.
Sheffield Hallam University brought their ‘road show’ to Friesland during the last week of term to offer taster lectures and deliver presentations on potential future career strands. The day also included a session preparing students’ for their Extended Project Qualification.
