Once again we took 6 very excited Year 12’s to Philadelphia. We flew direct from Heathrow and travelled to the American High school to meet our host families. The week passed in a whirl. We experienced lots of new things from the PEP rally (where the whole school puts on a massive performance to encourage the school football team to win that weekend), the football game itself, a visit to Philadelphia city centre and to the beautiful Washington DC.
Our students had the whole American experience, attending lessons, hanging out, eating and drinking at the various cafes, loads of shopping at the huge malls and getting chatted up by the American boys. They had a wonderful experience and all were very sad to leave.
We climbed aboard an Amtrak locomotive to New York and anticipated the first glimpse of New York City. It didn’t disappoint. We made our way out of the station to be greeted by the sounds and sights of the city. The noise was incredible. Traffic, honking horns, people, steamy pavements and of course, skyscrapers. We climbed into two of the infamous yellow cabs and set off (slowly) up 8th Avenue to our Hotel.
After lunch we walked to the Rockefeller building and whizzed our way to the top in a very fast elevator. The view was incredible. We could see Ground Zero, the Empire State building one way, and Central Park the other. We spent a long time at the top face-timing friends and family making them feel very jealous as well as taking lots of photo’s. We then hopped aboard a tour bus and circled our way round the sights of midtown NYC. As it was getting dark, the lights looked great as we edged our way through the traffic. Those sirens are very loud!
We ate dinner in a restaurant which had singing waiters and were serenaded by quite a few, all of whom were hoping for a break on Broadway. The next day we did another tour, downtown this time and took in a few more sights including Ground Zero and a view of the Statue of Liberty and of course hit the shops in and around Times Square. We had such a good time and it was a great end to a great exchange visit. We look forward to the American Students returning in the summer.
