Our senior school show takes place annually in December and we decided that this year we would take full advantage of the fantastic array of talent we have in years 10-13 to put on the most ambitious show we have ever done – Les Misérables! We were lucky that a number of our students who auditioned had been involved in the recent production of Les Misérables with EMUs. Three days of outstanding auditions in September left the production team with a very difficult task deciding who to cast in which roles.
However, that was only the start of things! We had given ourselves just under 3 months to bring together the challenging musical and dramatic elements of the show. Our cast embraced the challenge, rehearsing hard under guidance from Mrs Maclaughlin, Miss Beckett and Mrs York, two or three nights a week for 10 weeks. Whilst the cast were learning the 30 or so songs for the show, our small band was getting to grips with complicated musical accompaniments.
The hard work by all our students paid off as, come December 2015, the cast and band produced three truly outstanding nights of theatre to sold out audiences of their friends, family and Friesland staff who had come to show their support. Each night’s show concluded with an unprompted standing ovation from the audience in appreciation of the hard work put in by the students, and many emails have been received congratulating and celebrating their efforts. Of course, no show is complete without “behind the scenes” support and thanks must be made to our brilliant and unstoppable team of student technicians and production crew who worked so hard to make each night run as smoothly as possible. A huge well done to everyone involved – see you on the next show!
