In October 2015 the year 9 students had the opportunity to visit the WWI battlefield in the Ypres Salient and Somme regions, as well as take part in the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres. The students visited many of the more famous sites and explored in further detail some of the key events of WWI and the significance WWI still has today. They were able to visit such areas as Passchendaele and Thiepval memorials and look into the various aspects of remembrance surrounding the Great War.
The students also had a chance to enjoy some of the more interactive aspects of the museum and trench tours giving them a glimpse at the life of a WWI soldier. They also managed to visit the ‘famous’ chocolatiers in Ypres (possibly unlike many of the WWI soldiers!)
The behaviour and engagement of the students was fantastic throughout the trip and many were keen to return to further explore the region further.
We are hoping to run the same trip again in October 2016 as it is the anniversary of some of the most famous conflicts of WWI.
